Tucked away on the side streets across from City Square and CIQ in Johor Bahru, you have some nice old places to have a quick and cheap meal. I went exploring and found two places, this place and Restoran Kin Hua, which is the next post. You just walk by and sometimes you don’t even realize that there is a food stall there. But there is. Located next to the OCBC Bank on Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, right off of Jalan Wong Ah Fook, it is an old and special place.
The old man that prepares the food here is great. He’s all business, and then he is helped by what I believe is his wife and a younger auntie.
It’s one of those places that doesn’t have a menu. So you just go and you ask what they have. You choose the size, tell them what kind of noodles you want, and if you want it dry or soup. It’s that simple. They have all kinds of noodles. And behind there is some Wu Xiang also if you want.
So I went for the 6RM size. Quite a bit of food is what you get. Take a look at it below. Dry and with some chili sauce. The fishballs are homemade, but the pork balls are store bought (I saw the bag). Then there are some prawns, some mince meat, fish cakes, bean sprouts and scallions.
I went for Mee Pok, but next time I think I will try the Kway Teow in soup. I tell you, mix it up and it is one great flavorful noodle dish.
For 6RM, what a deal. The taste is great, the atmosphere is old school. Sit back and enjoy the visit and food.
