Going to a floating market when visiting Bangkok is a fun thing to do. If you can take the heat and how to get there, then they are much to go to. We chose to go to ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม (Khlong Lat Mayom) because it was the shortest distance from the center of the city and we had heard it was the most “local” of the floating markets.
A short BTS Skytrain ride and then a 15 minute taxi ride and we were there. It was quite easy to get to!
This place is crowded that’s for sure. We were trying to get there before the crowd, but by 11am, it was packed. So we decided to go for a River Cruise on the longtail boats and then come back.
It didn’t change at 1pm. It was still crowded as anything!
We decided to go for some grilled seafood, in this case it was Squid. Grilled fresh and served to you.
Great taste, you can taste the grill. The chili that is was served with was awesome. Spicy, yes, but it was also refreshing.
Then, I knew that we had to get the Fresh Prawns cooked in pot with Vermicelli. This stall was a long queue stall and for good reason. He cooks eight at a time, so take your time. Get your queue number and wait.
He mixes the herbs, garlic, etc. in first, then adds in the prawn and then the vermicelli. Then he adds the sauce. The prawns are fresh as can be.
He expertly cooks his way through eight pots, adding, mixing, adding, mixing, etc. About 5-8 minutes later, they are done. Meanwhile you are in queue counting. Will I make the next batch? Or do I have to wait for the next one? How many will the people ahead of me order?
Finally, it’s your turn and they give it to you in a box. Not on a plate, but in a box so you can carry it.
Open it up and there you have it! Wow. Look at that! Juicy prawns, perfectly cooked and flavored Tang Hoon. And a great chili sauce to go with it. Heaven!
It was hot, no doubt about it. It doesn’t help the appetite, and we wanted to eat more, but some stalls were selling out around 2pm. But, there is a lot to try. Go and check it out, it is fun to see, eat and the river cruise is quite fun too.
