One of the other things that I search for in Singapore is Mexican fast food. I don’t mean Taco Bell, what I mean is that I miss the Chipotle burrito. Yes, I said it, I miss that fast food. But it’s pretty darn good. So I continually look for a fast food type burrito that is like Chipotle. I may have found it in Baja Fresh.
Located at the Rendezvous Hotel, right on Bras Basah, within walking distance of The Cathay and Plaza Singapura, I was told about this place by some Californians I met. I looked up the website and got interested, so I decided to go check it out for a late lunch.
Inside it’s your typical fast food joint.
There is a salsa bar here, with four different kinds. The hot, is not really so hot. When you order a meal, you get some tortilla chips with it, so you grab your salsas here. Sort of like Moe’s, you can choose what you want. The Pico is really, really mild, and the Salsa Molcajete is probably the best one there. I also pour it into my burrito and on my tacos too.
Anyways, time to order. The menu is quite extensive. They have “set” burritos and tacos, etc. Meaning that they already determine what is inside for you, you really don’t get to choose.
I saw the Mahi Mahi Taco on the menu, so I had to get it. I love to try fish tacos, just to see how they are. It came out looking fantastic! Full of ingredients and fresh. I also think fish tacos are best on soft tortillas, not crunchy ones.
I folded it up and dug in. Nice flavors, with a little salsa on it. My only problem with it was that I thought the fish was a little overcooked, otherwise, great! The price, not so great, $7 for it!
Next up, was the burrito. I do not like beans, so I chose the Ultimo burrito, which was Grilled Veggies, Rice, Jack and Cheddar Cheese, Salsa and sour cream with your choice of meat. This is basically the Fajita Burrito at Chipolte, which is what is my standard order at Chipotle. Your choices of meat are Chicken, Steak, Pork Carnitas (which they call Char Siew here in Singapore), Prawns or Mahi Mahi. I always go for Carnitas, because I love the tenderness of the pork meat.
First off, I did not quite like that it was “grilled”, but it was ok. I would have preferred it fresh steamed tortilla, but it wasn’t that bad. The size was enormous. Very Chipotle like. Then I cut it open to check it out.
Man, it looked good. Then I took a bite. Man it was good. Plenty of meat inside, and the other fillings, not too much rice, which sometimes happens. Add a little salsa, and it was plenty good!
So I think I may have finally found that Mexican Burrito Fast Food joint that I have been looking for! Go try it! They have Quesadillas also, and they also make the Burritos Enchilada style, so you can enjoy that as well.
