Someone always asks me this question, “If I had to make a Top 5 list of things to eat, what would they be?”. I won’t reveal the other 4, but I have to say that the Curry Crab Meat at Somboon Seafood is in this Top 5.
There is no doubt about it, it is an iconic dish for me. I love it, I can’t get enough of it, and I want to eat it every time I am in Bangkok. If I can get to Somboon, I will do so.
Since the early days of Somboon, they have now expanded to new shopping malls and other places where you can easily access their food in “better” conditions than at Ratchada. In case you don’t like the “seediness” of the Soapy Bathhouses, you can go to Siam Square now for this classic.
Head right to Level 4 of Siam Square and you have Somboon. It’s not that big inside, and fills up quickly, so get there quickly, and not at rush hours.
The menu is pretty big, but I go for simple things. I love the Fried Whole Fish with Thai herbs. Imagine the sauces, sweet, salty, sour, spicy all combined with Peanuts, Onion, Chili, Garlic and herbs. You get this. Eat the whole thing except the head and fins. Your life will be different.
Then here it comes. The Curry Crab Meat. A combination of Yellow Curry, Curry Powder, Chili Oil and herbs. Stir fried with Green Onions, Chili, and wonderful goodness. Get yourself some rice and have at it. I bet you can’t stop.
Remember, get the Curry Crab meat. They have it in shell too, but for a very small fee, take just the meat and don’t waste your time peeling crab shells.
We ordered the medium size, but apparently the first picture was the small size. We ate it halfway and then said, oops, we gave you the wrong size and proceeded to bring us a brand new medium size!
And then we only got charged for the small! What a win!Top 5. I don’t need to say any more.
