Fresh Seafood, you have to love it. Especially when you can buy it still alive and then have it cooked. That’s what Wan Chai Seafood Street in Zhuhai has. Fresh Seafood, great prices and yumminess.
Here is how it works. You can do it one of two ways.
1 – You choose a restaurant first, then head out the back door and buy your seafood
2 – You buy your seafood first, then choose a restaurant to have your meal
Either way, you go in with your seafood after buying it and let them know how you want eat of the different types cooked.
We choose the restaurant first because we never saw the Seafood vendors until after.
We decided to choose this restaurant. For no particular reason except that it was bigger and had more people. One side of the restaurant was full and the other was seating.
They then told us to go outside and buy our seafood.
Wow, that was all we could say when we went outside. A huge row of seafood vendors up and down. There had to be at least 100 vendors out there. All displaying the fresh seafood in bins and baskets, ready to sell.
Look at the crabs, clams, fish, prawns, it’s all there.
Bargain like crazy and get that price down. If you don’t like it, move on to another vendor. See what’s interesting and what is not. You choose!
We wound up with a lot of items from a few different places, sometimes paying 1/3 of the original offered price. Competition!
All in all we paid about 500 RMB for all our seafood, about USD$80/SGD$100. You’ll see what a bargain that is in a moment.
In South China, especially Guandong province, your dining set comes prepacked. Cleaned and ready to eat. They’ll bring the tea and hot water for you to wash your plates and utensils with.
The restaurant we chose, they actually came and washed for us.As with all of these types of restaurants, you can choose some Land items that are not seafood. We added some Pan Fried Buns with Braised Pork inside. Similar to the Sheng Jian Bao from Shanghai.
Great taste on these! But we’re all about the seafood. In South China/Hong Kong I am all about the Mantis Prawn. Big ones, fresh and fried up with Garlic and Chilies. Man, the meat was so fresh and sweet and just plain tasty.
I can’t really get this anywhere else and certainly not so fresh and for this price. This is a must have for South China seafood.Clams stir fried with Chilies and Black Beans. So fresh and great. We had about 2kg of them here.
Sea Snails. Baked with Salt, Pepper and Herbs. I have never had them this way, my colleague suggested it this way. They dried out a little in the end, but man, so good. I usually like them with Chilies and Black Bean, but this was good too.
Oysters. Steamed with Birds Eye Chilies and Garlic and Scallions. So sweet and fresh. I have become an Oyster convert now.
Abalone. Fresh and sweet. Same preparation, and oh so good.
Small little crabs. These were all female crabs, so the roe just gushed out and the meat was so sweet no matter how small they were. I thought they would be too small and not worth it, but man, was I wrong!
A Grouper, about 2kg, steamed Hong Kong style. Fresh, meaty, smooth and just delicious.
Wow, now you see the bargain? 500RMB for the seafood, they added another 200 RMB for cooking, etc. Wow, wow, wow.
The place is really not near anything, but it is right across from Macau. Get here if you’re going to Zhuhai!
