The Beast – Kampong Glam

I kept hearing about The Beast, a Southern US place located in Kampong Glam.  I had to go one night and so I wound up there with some colleagues one night.

The Beast is a Southern kitchen, thus you want Fried Chicken, Biscuits, Waffles, etc.  So let’s go!  First we started with drinks, and I went for Sweet Tea.  Pure Southern. Now The Beast has what is called a Family Style Dinner.  At S$38 per pax, a minimum of 4 pax, you get a whole Southern style dinner.

The first course has Cornbread.  A little dry, but lather it with butter, oh yeah!

Next was a Southern Harvest Salad.  Comprised of Blueberry, Peach, Frisee, Onion, Pecan, Strawberry, Apple, Quinoa and Pomegranate with a Cranberry Champagne Vinaigrette.  Light and refreshing. And of course the Southern Staple – Shrimp and Grits.  I am not a huge Grits fan, so my tasting of it was just ok.  The others loved it.  The Shrimp was cooked nicely though, full of flavor.Main Course time!  One of the sides was Mac and Cheese.  This was classic unhealthy cheesy Southern goodness.  The layer of cheese on top and then broiled?  Very chewy and cheesy. And the Fried Chicken!  With Waffles and Green Beans with Bacon.   Yes, I need to put it on the waffle  The chicken itself was juicy and moist.  You could taste the salt brine and the coating was crispy as anything.  This was some pretty good fried chicken! But wait!  Add the Bourbon Syrup to the Chicken and Waffles!  Another level of gluttony. And it comes with dessert.  Each pax gets to choose a dessert pie along with ice cream.  We went for four different ones. Here they are.  From top left going clockwise – Banana Creme Pie, Chocolate Cheese Pie, another Banana Creme, and then Pecan Pie.  All yum. It’s actually enough to feed six people.  It was good, really good.  A good deal at S$38 a pax.
